The 1.35 volt #640 mercury cells are hard (impossible?) to purchase anymore. Fred Philibert of PhotoBattery.com sells model #A640PX 1.5 volt replacement alkaline cells.

Here's what Mr. Philibert says about use of the alkalines in this camera:

The battery voltage is 1.5v; the originals were 1.35v. It's hard to say whether this will affect exposure or not. That depends on the type of the meter circuit used, and I don't know about this particular model. Remember, the CdS cells used to sense light have aged and their response has changed a lot, too. If the voltage creates an error, it will be in the direction of underexposeure. But today's print films have exceptional exposure lattitude, and mask most errors.

I'd recommend loading it up and shooting a test roll under a variety of conditions. You may also try setting the film speed dial at 1/2 the rated speed and see what works best.
